Police have released the name of the female passenger of a car involved in a crash in Southland on New Year's Eve.
Emma Waitokia (23) was a passenger in one of the cars involved in a head-on collision near Orepuki on December 31.
Originally of Tapanui, Miss Waitokia has been living in Christchurch.
A police spokeswoman said Miss Waitokia had suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the crash and continued to be in a serious but stable condition in Dunedin Hospital.
Emergency services were called to the crash on the Tuatapere-Orepuki Highway, 10km north of Orepuki, about 11am on New Year's Eve.
The road was closed for about 13 hours and two people trapped in their vehicle were cut free by the Fire Service.
Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley, of Winton, said the driver of the car Miss Waitokia was in suffered moderate injuries, and the sole occupant of the other vehicle received a broken pelvis and lacerations. It was unknown if they remained in hospital.
A police investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing, Snr Sgt Fairley said.
