Pupils get hands-on in ‘Islands to Arks’

A group of pupils from Waverly Park School had a hands-on class yesterday.

They took part in the Otago Museum’s latest project, "Islands to Arks", which visited Miharo in Invercargill yesterday to educate about the pressing outcomes of climate change in the Pacific: rising seas, coral bleaching and the destruction of homes and villages

The exhibition included a lively presentation using small-scale experiments to demonstrate the large-scale features of climate change, including a wave tank, a cyclone simulator and an augmented reality sandbox.

Science engagement co-ordinator Pasifika Emily Eastgate said it was great to engage with the children.

"I really wanted to take the science of what is happening and make it a hands-on experience.

"In order for our people to be engaged politically and push for change, we need to understand the problem and be able to fully participate in climate conversation", she said.
