Parade’s new look popular

A change of vibe seems to have been popular with Gore district residents, who turned out in their hundreds for the annual Christmas parade.

Thirty-three floats were in the parade and then residents adjourned to the Gore Gardens for a carnival.

Gore District Council events co-ordinator Jessica Swan said it was a change of emphasis from the usual Christmas in the park event from previous years.

"We’ve gone for a different vibe this year with a carnival atmosphere.

"We wanted it to be bit of a refresh, a rebrand, have a big party kind of feel after last year’s cancellation."

Instead of having many groups entertaining the crowd, three main acts — street performer Nathan Bonner, of Christchurch, Gore singers Ella Cupit, Sophie Cupit and Hamish Waddell and magician Jimmy Marvel — took to the stage.

Sponsors made it possible for many of the attractions to be free, she said.

The International Connect group had representatives of many different cultures on its float.

Gore Mayor Ben Bell said he was very impressed with the turnout.

"Town’s absolutely packed.

"The town really comes to life."

The number of people who had come out to join in the Christmas spirit was great, Mr Bell said.
