No-one home as fire strikes house

When 30 firefighters from Riverton, Colac Bay, Otautau, Thornbury and Wallacetown arrived at a John St house (below) in Riverton about 3.30pm yesterday, an interior fire was well involved, Riverton Fire Station deputy chief Allen Eastwood said.

''We managed to get on top of it reasonably quickly but it suffered quite a bit of damage.''

The residents were not home, he said.

''Thankfully, no lives were put at risk.''

The highest concentration of heat was centred on a bedroom, he said.

The interior was ''extensively damaged'' but some of the house contents were salvageable.

The crews attended for more than three hours and a fire investigator would examine the house today, he said.
