MP philosophical

Finance Minister Bill English was philosophical when asked yesterday about his decision to retire as Clutha-Southland MP next year after representing the large electorate for 24 years.

Mr English (52) announced recently he would stand as a list-only candidate next year, opening the door for him to leave Parliament some time after 2014 without the need for a by-election in the electorate.

He told the Otago Daily Times he had not given any thought to his future after politics.

''There is too much to do. Everyone has to leave and, hopefully, I have developed a few skills I can find useful.''

Mr English said his decision was made because of his reluctance to let down his family, the electorate and the Government.

He admitted to being a ''bit stretched'' by serving all three.

''It's hard to leave when things are going well, but it is better to leave before things start dropping away.''

Mr English retained a house and a block of land in English Rd, Dipton, which had become the ''farm track'' as one of his brothers operated a large dairy farm on the same road.

''I was just down there the other day thinking I won't be doing too much of this in the future. I will miss the electorate. I like it and I have been there longer than any of the mayors. There will be a bit less travel,'' he said.
