The much-admired views fromManapouri township across Lake Manapouri are disappearing behind a screen of trees and scrub, prompting work to restore them.
Southland District Council chief executive David Adamson said the Manapouri foreshore management plan allowed for vegetation to be cut back to maintain the views across the lake.
The Manapouri Community Development Area subcommittee asked the council to support the work being carried out because of its concerns views over the lake were being steadily eroded as trees and scrub along Cathedral Dr and Waiau St continued to grow.
CDA members said Manapouri was in danger of losing its opportunity to provide "a lasting impression" on visitors and losing its attractiveness as a place to live.
The foreshore management plan, established through considerable community consultation, also built on the earlier plan for the Manapouri.
That plan was completed in 2000 and recorded a community desire to "maximise the town's connection with the lake . . . allow generous views over the water and beyond by carefully planned management of vegetation".
Work was expected to begin mid to late December and would take two weeks to complete.
