Mother and child uninjured in crash

An Invercargill mother and her child yesterday walked away unharmed from a serious crash in Oamaru.

Police were yesterday still investigating how the car (pictured left) veered off State Highway 1 and hit a power pole about 1pm, near the Oamaru racecourse.

Senior Constable Stewart Hewett said the car, driven by a 23-year-old woman from Invercargill, was travelling south when it hit the pole.

Snr Const Hewett said no injuries were apparent, but the woman's 23-month-old child was taken to Oamaru Hospital for a check-up.

State Highway 1 was closed in both directions, and a diversion put in place for about 35 minutes after the crash.

Although a power pole was knocked over during the crash, no power outages were reported.
