Despite the weather there was no dampening of the festive spirit at Christmas in the Park at Invercargill’s Queens Park on Saturday.

Hundreds of people gathered around the Queens Park band rotunda for an afternoon of music, games, food and fun presented by Massav Productions.

Rain threatened, but that did not stop people from setting up a spot at the event, with picnic mats and camp chairs filling the grassed area.

The Ryder family travelled down from Auckland to spend the holiday season in Invercargill with family, and Anna Ryder said they were not put off by rain — they were there to hear the carols.

Event-goers heard music from The Possum Pickers, Jetset, Sam Cullen, Lachie Hayes, Ramblin’ Rosie’s and even Santa.

There were many activities to keep the children occupied, with mini golf, swingball and football on offer.

Invercargill local Yvonne Gawn said she wore her Santa ensemble for the merry occasion every year.

"I dress like this on Christmas, too."

This year was slightly different, however, as she had persuaded her friend to take part in the festivities.

"I made her this dress so she could join in."

The event started at 3pm and continued until 9pm.
