Man shot during confrontation pleads guilty to 15 charges

A man who was shot after confronting a police officer with a knife at Dacre last year still has the bullet in his abdomen.

The man pleaded guilty to 15 charges yesterday when he appeared in the Invercargill District Court.

He was granted interim name suppression by Judge Russell Walker.

The summary of facts was made available to the Otago Daily Times after the guilty pleas were formally entered.

It states on March 17 last year the man offended while he was on bail by going to his partner’s home and confronting her.

During the confrontation he used an axe and pot plant to damage her car and kicked her in the thigh. He left when police were called by the woman.

Two days later, about 9am, an ex-partner of the same woman informed police he had received a text from the man.

He said the text read: "She’s gone, she’s dead, I’ve killed her. She’s hanging in a container."

Police searched a storage yard in Invercargill before travelling to the man’s house in Dacre.

When police got there the man was hostile. When they believed they heard a firearm being shot from inside the house they retreated.

Not long after the man got into a car, intentionally drove into a police car before driving off towards State Highway 1.

As he approached the Dacre Hall intersection his car stopped due to damaged sustained when he rammed the police car. He got out of the car.

"Witnesses parked behind him described what they thought to be the defendant loading some sort of firearm," the summary states.

He went up to one car and shouted at the people to get out then approached the driver of a milk tanker stopped in the northbound lane near Dacre.

The man tried to gain access to the cab of the truck breaking the window with a metal firearm bolt.

"The tanker driver then grabbed a metal pipe from inside the cab and hit the defendant on the head to get him off his cab."

The man then tried to get into the passenger side of another car, but was unable to as the driver held the door shut.

A police officer approached the man on foot armed with a 40mm sponge round firearm.

The man then began to swing a knife at him multiple times causing the officer to retreat.

The police officer’s firearm failed to fire.

"The police officer then drew his Glock pistol and shot the defendant once."

When the defendant fell to the ground, police officers immediately began to administer trauma care.

St John staff driving an ambulance from Gore to Invercargill came across the scene and assisted.

At his court appearance yesterday the man confirmed the bullet was still in his abdomen with Judge Walker adding medical notes also detailed bullet fragments were still contained in different parts of his body.

The man will appear for sentence on April 27 in relation to the charges including three charges of possession of an offensive weapon, assault on a person in a family relationship, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault with a weapon and attempted aggravated robbery.

He was referred for restorative justice ahead of sentencing.
