Man pleads not guilty to further charges

A man accused of shooting another man at Kapuka has pleaded not guilty to a further four charges.

The 34-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, appeared via audiovisual link before Judge Ajit Swaran Singh in the Invercargill District Court at a bail application hearing yesterday.

He already faces a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at Mokotua on May 26, to which he has entered a not-guilty plea.

Yesterday, he pleaded not guilty to unlawfully carrying a pistol, discharging a pistol with reckless disregard, using a pistol to wound with intent and intentionally damaging a motor vehicle at Mokotua on the same day, and elected trial by jury on all matters.

Defence counsel Scott Williamson applied for bail as the man has been in custody since the time the alleged offending took place.

While details of the hearing are suppressed, Judge Singh granted the man bail with conditions, including he live at his father’s house in Palmerston North on a 24/7 curfew; he not contact the victim, his ex-wife or his children, except when a court order allowed; and he not come to the South Island.

The judge also ordered he not have access to firearms.

"I’m putting you on notice that should you breach your bail conditions, you risk being remanded in custody as these are serious charges," Judge Swaran Singh said.

He was remanded to appear on July 11.
