Man charged over crash that left woman with broken ribs

A woman received broken ribs on the way to her husband’s funeral after a Balclutha man failed to stop at a red traffic light in Invercargill.

Aidan David Eustace (36), of Balclutha, yesterday appeared in the Gore District Court on a charge of careless driving causing injury in Invercargill on April 4.

The summary of facts stated Eustace was driving east on Spey St on a clear day.

"The victim in this matter was in the passenger seat of her daughter’s vehicle travelling south on Deveron St to her husband’s funeral."

The defendant, who admitted being distracted at the time, came to the intersection and made no attempt to stop, despite the light being red.

He drove through the intersection and collided with the driver’s side of the other vehicle.

"Due to the necessity to attend the family funeral, the victim was assessed by ambulance staff on scene.

"But [she] later followed up in hospital the following day due to ongoing issues from the vehicle crash," the summary stated.

The woman sustained broken ribs and bruising to the chest.

Judge Noel Walsh yesterday ordered Eustace to pay $700 emotional harm reparation and disqualified him from driving for six months.
