Air New Zealand announced yesterday the service would begin on August 25, when the first flight would arrive in Invercargill from Auckland. The return flight will depart the next day on August 26.
Invercargill will become the first non-international regional airport in New Zealand to have a regular passenger A320 jet service.
The service will also be the longest domestic flight in the country.
Venture Southland chief executive Paul Casson said he was excited for the route to start.
Plans had already been put in place to help market the route, particularly in and around Auckland, to help attract visitors to Southland.
''There is a strategy that is being developed around marketing to the Auckland region but also offshore, down the track.''
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the airline would conduct an extensive promotional campaign for the new route by featuring it in its in-flight magazine as well as promoting it heavily on its website and social media.
