Eight fire crews converged on a house engulfed in flames in Southland this morning.

It is understood the house is on State Highway 6 between Winton and Lorneville, just out of Lochiel.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Brent Dunn said multiple calls were received regarding the fire at 10.37am.

Wallacetown and Winton crews responded and ''arrived to find the house well ablaze'', he said.

They called for more appliances and tankers to assist from Wallacetown and multiple crews battled the blaze.

Mr Dunn said later crews had begun departing the scene and the operating was ''winding down'' by about 12pm.

The number of crews at the scene had reduced from eight to five, he said.

There were no reports of injuries and it was too early to determine the cause, but firefighters were not treating the blaze as suspicious.
