Gore man takes national snooker champs

Two previous champions have battled it out in Gore to find this year’s national snooker title winner, with Gore’s Shannon Swain prevailing.

Swain beat Deepak Bala, of Auckland, six frames to three in the best of 11 match.

The players were taking part in the New Zealand Billiards and Snooker Association (NZBSA) 2022 national snooker championships.

The championships were played at the Gore Town and Country Club and Gore and Districts Memorial RSA.

The plate final was won by Mike Grattan, of Gore.

Swain said he was very pleased with the result.

"Couldn’t be happier.

"Especially on home soil as well."

The tournament had been held twice before in Gore.

"It’s been a long time coming to actually win it here."

In Saturday morning’s semifinal game Swain, seeded sixth, beat top seed Mark Canovan, of Christchurch, in the deciding last set to take the match five frames to four.

Tournament director Dave Judd said a quality field of 20 entered the tournament, including Bala, who won in 2018, and Swain, who was the 2019 champion.

"The standard of snooker has been high."

Every day there had been players who had scored 40 or 50 points on one turn or break, Judd said.

No-one had a century break, but Swain came close when he scored an 80 break, he said.

Swain thus also won the prize money for the highest break of the tournament.

"Even though we are so-called in the middle of nowhere, to put on a class venue to go with a class event — you can’t say any more," Judd said.

He enjoyed coming to Gore.

"They certainly look after you here in Gore."
