Four people were injured when their van hit a tree near Tuatapere in Southland this morning.
Senior Sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said two helicopters were despatched to the crash on Lillburn Valley Rd just after 8am for two patients who sustained moderate to serious injuries.
The other two people in the van sustained minor injuries.
He did not know whether the patients who were taken by helicopter went to Dunedin Hospital or Southland Hospital.
The cause of the crash was unknown, and no further details were available.
