Flood warning system hacked

A cyber attack by Chinese computer hackers on Environment Southland's flood-warning system was thwarted last week, it has been revealed.

The attack, on two council computers which supply data to the automated telephone reporting system, meant users were unable to get the most up-to-date information.

Environment Southland corporate services director Graham Alsweiler said the attack occurred during a period of rising river levels but was more a "frustration than a problem for people involved".

It appeared the hackers, who used Chinese email addresses, found a gap in Environment Southland's computer system firewall, which was now closed, he said.

It was unknown why the hackers targeted Environment Southland.

"I don't know what motivates internet vandals at all," he said.

Otago Regional Council environmental information and science director John Threlfall said there had been no reported cyber attacks on the ORC system.
