Fatal-crash passenger denies charges

A man involved in the crash that took the life of Invercargill nurse Emma Bagley has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces and will face trial.

Taine Rupena Tata Bryn Edwards was sitting in the passenger seat of Dejay Rawiri Kane's car when he was speeding and caused the fatal crash.

Edwards appeared yesterday in the High Court at Invercargill, where he has been charged of being party to manslaughter by inciting and encouraging the driver to operate a vehicle recklessly, thereby causing death.

He also faces three counts of inciting and encouraging the driver to operate a vehicle recklessly, thereby causing injury.

On December 7, 2018, Mrs Bagley (37) died when the car she was in with her husband, Leonard, and their two children, Eva and Flynn, was T-boned by the car Kane was driving, at the intersection of Newcastle and Clifton Sts, in the Invercargill suburb of Windsor.

Kane was a disqualified driver, his blood-alcohol level was three times limit and was estimated to be driving at 121kmh, while Mrs Bagley was travelling at 44kmh.

Edwards' arm was broken in the crash.

Last month, Kane pleaded guilty to one charge of manslaughter and four charges of reckless driving causing injury. He will be sentenced on October 15.

Edwards will next appear on December 10.

A trial date has been set for June 8 next year.
