A former councillor is the first person to throw his hat in the ring for a Invercargill City Council by-election.

Nominations opened two weeks ago after Nigel Skelt resigned from the council.

Speaking to the Otago Daily Times yesterday, former Invercargill city councillor and pharmacist Graham Lewis said after thinking carefully about the subject, he decided to have another shot.

"After a few months of not being around the council, I do miss it. I think and I know I have the ability to do the job."

Mr Lewis had 6269 votes in the last year’s election, missing out by 26 votes to

Cr Barry Stewart, who was the last person to secure a position on the council.

Mr Lewis said he still thought he owed something to the city.

Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark said he expected more candidates to come forward closer to the deadline.

Nominations close on June 8.

Election day is scheduled for August 4.
