Southland hunter Gordon Kawau (left) is reunited with his dog, Mana, in Oamaru yesterday, thanks to the quick thinking of local man Blair Brosnan.

After escaping injury in a car crash in central Oamaru on Sunday, Mr Kawau discovered two of his four hunting dogs were missing from their cage attached to the back of the Toyota Hilux ute.

One came back when called, but 6-year-old greyhound Labrador Mana was not found until yesterday afternoon when Mr Brosnan, a refrigeration engineer, spotted the dog peeking out from behind a building in Tees St.

He recognised Mana from social media and was able to call the dog over.

After a few calls around town, Mr Brosnan found Mr Kawau and reunited the pair.

Mr Kawau said he was relieved to have his dog back.

``He hates town. I thought he would have gone to the bush.''

The dogs were not injured in the crash.
