DNA has led to the arrest of a 30-year-old Christchurch man who allegedly assaulted a 7-year-old girl in Te Anau a decade ago.
Invercargill police yesterday travelled to Christchurch and arrested the man for the 2002 incident, where a male unlawfully entered a house in Te Anau and assaulted the girl who was asleep in bed at the address.
This girl was a visitor at the address, Invercargill CIB acting detective senior sergeant Mike Bowman said.
Forensic DNA evidence has linked the man to the incident, and he is to appear in the Christchurch District Court next week on a charge of burglary and one of indecent assault on a girl aged under 12.
Invercargill Police were pleased to have a result in this historic matter, which had caused much unrest within the Te Anau community.
