Police were involved in a high-speed chase through Invercargill on Tuesday night. The pursuit began after a driver failed to stop for a marked patrol car in Crinan St at 10pm.
Police had earlier been informed the male driver had allegedly assaulted the female passenger.
During the pursuit, the car reached speeds up to 100kmh through South Invercargill before crashing into a centre island and hitting a lighting pole.
Both people in the car were unhurt.
The driver, who was charged with driving while disqualified, reckless driving, failing to stop and behaving in a threatening manner, will appear in the Invercargill District Court this week.
