Caltex petrol stations throughout the country are having underground storage tanks replaced as part of a nationwide replacement programme and Gore is no exception.

The latest Gore petrol station to undergo an upgrade is Curson Motors, which re-opened on Tuesday.

The replacement programme was being undertaken by Chevron New Zealand, which markets Caltex, Chevron spokeswoman Sharon Buckland said.

‘‘The nationwide underground storage-tank replacement programme registers all underground tanks when they are 15 years old - as the tanks in Gore are - and lists them for environmental upgrade to new, double-hulled, fibreglass tanks that meet more up-to-date environmental standards,'' Ms Buckland said.

Curson Motors manager Maree Gentle said it had taken about two months to replace the tanks. The exercise involved local tradespeople including drainlayers and electricians, she said.
