Board to discuss possible demolition of closed pool

After lying derelict for more than five years, the Mataura Centennial Pool may be put out of its misery.

The Mataura Community Board is scheduled to meet on Monday and one of the items for discussion is the potential demolition of the pool.

In a report, Gore District Council aquatic services manager Martin Mackereth said the pool was closed in 2017 after consultation with the community and consideration of several issues with the facility, as well as its condition and operational costs.

"The reality is that the pool needed to be rebuilt from the ground, including all its infrastructure and the building itself, to be compliant and safe."

He estimated it would cost more than $5million.

His recommendation to the board is that it requests the council demolish the pool and look at incorporating a "zero-depth water feature" as part of the Tulloch Park redevelopment, similar to the one at Queens Park in Invercargill.

"This not only is a point of difference within the Gore District community, but it is also a great tool in starting the development of water familiarisation, by having children play in a way in which they get comfortable with water going on and over their head and face, in a fun environment."

If approved by the board, the recommendation will then be considered by councillors at the next full council meeting.
