At least eight fire crews converged on a burning house  in Southland yesterday morning.

It is understood the house, pictured during the fire,  is near State Highway 6 between Winton and Ryal Bush, just out of Lochiel.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Brent Dunn said multiple calls were received about  the fire from 10.36am.

Wallacetown and Winton crews responded and arrived to find the house "well ablaze", he said.

They called for more assistance from Wallacetown and multiple crews battled the blaze with hose reels, bringing the fire  under control by noon. There were no reports of injuries.

All firefighters had left the scene by 4.30pm but the cause of the blaze remained unknown. Mr Dunn said a fire investigator would be on the scene this morning.
