The continuing closure of the 42km stretch between Lake Gunn and Milford Village was a precaution, because an avalanche on Constellation Peak last year, agency area manager Peter Robinson, of Dunedin, said yesterday.
More rain today could turn to fresh snow on the already unstable ice pack.
Active bombing to break the ice pack by agency contractors was prepared, but bombing depended on the weather, he said.
"It has been one of our longer closures, but we have had pockets ... [for traffic]. It's the nature of the weather," he said.
