An Invercargill youngster sustained fatal injuries after a chest of drawers and a television set landed on him.
Detective Sergeant Grant Johnstone, of Invercargill CIB, said the 3-year-old boy was trying to climb on to a small coffee table that supported a chest of drawers and an older cathode ray tube television, when they fell on him.
The boy was taken to Southland Hospital by St John ambulance on Saturday morning.
He died later that day.
Det Sgt Johnstone said the incident was eerily similar to another incident in the city, when a 16-month-old boy was admitted to Southland Hospital after a television fell on him, which was also resting on a chest of drawers.
The boy was later transferred to Starship Hospital, in Auckland, and treated for several weeks.
The "latest tragedy" had been referred to the coroner, and Det Sgt Johnstone declined to answer further questions.
However, he reminded parents of young children to make sure heavy items were secured in their homes.
