‘One finger salute’ defendant advised to accept offered help

A man who had previously given a judge a "one finger salute" was told by the same judge to make the most of the help being offered to him.

Tyler Jade Hodgkinson-Harris (19) appeared for sentence at the Invercargill District Court on Friday on charges of threatening behaviour, possession of an offensive weapon, resisting police, and two breaches breach of bail.

The offending came from two incidents, one at a relation’s house where he was involved in an argument and ended up stabbing a bench with a kitchen knife after threatening the occupant on September 11 last year.

The second incident happened after the occupants at the address he was living at told him he could no longer live there.

After police tried to talk to Hodgkinson-Harris through a closed door, he came out with a knife in each hand and advanced within 1m of police.

Hodgkinson-Harris had been in custody for about three weeks.

"Last time you appeared you gave me the one finger salute and walked out," Judge Jim Large said.

"It’s important you get some help.

"You do have issues you need assistance with."

The judge said if Hodgkinson-Harris continued to carry knives he would possibly end up hurting himself or somebody else, "and that will have huge consequences for you".

He convicted and discharged Hodgkinson-Harris on all matters.
