‘Family favourite’ returns for 17th event

About 1400 children are expected through the gates of the "Disneyland of the South" this year.

ILT Kidzone Festival, presented by Great South, opened for its 17th rendition yesterday, taking place at Southland Girls’ High School.

Great South events manager Karen Witham said she was excited to get the event under way.

"I’d say it’s Southland’s family favourite event of the year ... And what better time to run it than winter when you’re cooped up at home with some small children."

There had been big days organising the event and transforming the school into Kidzone, which would offer about 170 attractions for youngsters.

"We’re trying to pick those activities that perhaps they don’t have available in their home, or secondly, the quantity of scale — so in the Mega Blok room, there’s enough Mega Bloks to build a room.

"Ultimately, the experience that we’re trying to create is to try something new and create memories."

Suzanne McMurdo was at the front of the line with grandson Jacks Henry (10), who said he had been looking forward to the event since his mum bought tickets several weeks ago.

He was most looking forward to the mini-jeeps and building activities.
