Groundwork for the $5 million Clutha Recreation Centre has started.

Clutha Recreation Centre Inc spokeswoman Irene Mosley said Mike Hurring contracting had begun taking bucketloads of gravel out of the Clutha River and stockpiling it near the floodbank last week.

The old buildings and lights on the Dreaver Courts have also been removed to a level below the floodbank.

While the old buildings and lights had been removed from the netball courts, the building work would not start for another two weeks, she said.

With something like 800 truck-loads of gravel to come over the bank, it would take about two weeks just to stockpile all the gravel.

"It's quite a process. They've got ropes strung right across the river and operating buckets on a pulley system."
