The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board approved funding for a detailed map of Lawrence to be erected in the main street at the end of last year.
At a board meeting on Wednesday, board member Geoff Davidson said the map was originally designed with the expectation it would replace an old map in Ross St in Lawrence on the northern side of State Highway 8.
A "series of mistakes" were made before the map’s installation, including failing to consult the owner of the land the previous map was on, who did not want the new map erected on their property.
The board had to compromise and put the map on the southern side of the road.
"When that location [on the other side] became available that sign [map] was designed to fill the space," Mr Davidson said.
The "you are here" icon was repositioned to accommodate for the shift south so it was in the correct location on the map but the orientation of the map remained the same.
As the layout of the map remains the same, the directional arrows for nearby towns and highways look as if they point in the opposite direction to where the places are.
The Beaumont Highway is to the right of the sign but the map points to the left.
Lawrence-Tuapeka councillor Geoff Blackmore said it did not help that it took so long to organise and print the map.
"We had to put it up straight away when we got it."
The map was technically correct but "geographically" the orientation had confused several tourists and residents already.
Map designer Aimee Homer wrote to the community board pointing out there were some issues concerning the colour and printing of the map as well.
The board had been prompted to request a reprinting to address those issues.
Board member Elizabeth Ritchie said it had to take responsibility for the mistakes relating to the map’s orientation and design.
The board approved up to $1000 to rectify the map and report back on expenditure with the intention of not spending over the allocated amount.
The board would also consult the original designer to see what could be done to resolve the confusion surrounding the layout.
The map remains in place.
