Heriot School pupils show their excitement as they were treated to a first  look at a series of welcome signs to go at the entrance to the town.

The signs’ appearance was influenced by  pupils who submitted designs to the West Otago Community Board. The design was unveiled to  pupils on Wednesday. Clutha District West Otago ward councillor John Herbert used aspects from all the submissions to create an original design.

"That way there are no winners or losers," Cr Herbert said.

"We could have paid thousands for a professional to design something."

This way the pupils were able to leave their mark on the town.

A new slogan "where great things begin" was  chosen for the signs.

The three signs will be erected at different roads leading into the town at an approved cost of up to $10,000.  Cr Herbert was unsure exactly  when the signs would be installed.
