South Otago High School's new $3 million technology block is open for business.

Several hundred pupils, parents, staff, and other guests attended the opening of the new technology block last week.

When opening the facility, Clutha-Southland MP Bill English said about $13 billion in next year's budget was earmarked for education, and it was ''heartwarming'' to be able to see where some of the money was being spent.

''We need the best available tools for our children.''

Mr English praised the quality of education in rural areas.

''Our rural education is at least as good, often better, than the rest of the country.''

South Otago High School principal Joanne Hutt said the open-plan technology building was a great asset for the school and ''the kids like it''. The thick glass reduced sound, allowing theory classes to be held next to workshop areas.

The building includes a computer lab, staff rooms, wood and metal workshops and rooms for cooking, art, and fabric classes.
