Animal enthusiast Stephen Brassett takes a break in Balclutha with his two dogs, Jake and Piccolo, after walking from Invercargill.

Mr Brassett has started "the longest walk" around New Zealand to raise awareness for animal welfare and the SPCA.

He will  spend the next year walking the length of New Zealand with his two dogs and a custom-built trailer.

The walk was not that challenging, he said. His biggest concern was finding places to stay.

However, Mr Brassett had already received many offers of help and accommodation,  which surprised him.

He started the walk in Invercargill last week and stopped in Balclutha at  the weekend.

The next leg of his walk will take him to Dunedin, where he will visit the third SPCA on his journey.
