Lawrence’s annual celebration of its historic past begins tomorrow night, culminating in Lawrence Heritage Day centred at the Tuapeka Vintage Club on Sunday.

Tomorrow night, Tuapeka Goldfields Museum opens its new exhibit Our Favourite Things from 7.30pm to 9pm (free, donations welcome).

On Saturday night head to the races for the virtual Simpson Park Springtime Stakes.

Daytime Saturday and Sunday the Village Green will be hosting stalls for the early Christmas shopper.

Sunday’s heritage event runs all day, and offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the customs, traditions and way of life of a bygone era.

The Tuapeka Vintage Club, at the entrance to Gabriel’s Gully, will be cranking up some of its less active machines, thanks to the club’s new bale-type barrow with a mobile vintage tractor starter.

Club spokesman Gordon Duthie said cranking could be something of a challenge for some members, and the barrow would allow more vehicles to be kept active.

"This saves having a battery on every machine that has to be kept charged. The club is now looking for electric starter motors for some tractors.

"Club member Brian Taylor happened to find a frame and a couple of wheels for the barrow among the scrap metal pile that he used to make the barrow. Brian also included a glow-plug timer and separate connector plug for starting the diesel engine on the Field-Marshall that has had a glow plug fitted to its engine.

"Now, with a bit of training, most members will be able to start the machines."

Mr Duthie said the Heritage Day and wider weekend were fantastic family events with something for everyone, and the club was looking forward to welcoming characteristically big crowds this year.
