Two of South Otago's most prominent primary schools are celebrating jubilee events this weekend.

Balclutha Primary School will celebrate its 150th anniversary while Clinton School will celebrate its 141st year.

Clinton School Jubilee Committee treasurer Joy Carruthers said the school had intended to celebrate the 140th anniversary last year but ''missed the deadline''.

Festivities would include a dance and dinner on the Saturday night for both schools and the unveiling of a new sculpture on Saturday afternoon at Balclutha Primary School.

Balclutha principal Paddy Ford said it was a time for ex-pupils to celebrate the school that prepared them for later life.

He said he was looking forward to hearing the different stories people had about their time at the school.

''We've got several people speaking on the last night and everyone has been very pleased to be asked [to speak at the event],'' Mr Ford said.

Destination Conference Management event manager Pat Johnston helped organise the Balclutha Primary School 150th jubilee.

She said everyone was delighted with the numbers expected to attend.

Around 200 had registered and some ex-pupils were travelling from as far as the United Kingdom and Australia for the festivities, she said.

''It's really lovely watching people come back,'' Mrs Johnston said.

Mrs Carruthers said the Clinton School Jubilee committee organisers were very pleased with how things were going.

The festivities were a chance for friends to reconnect, she said.

Both schools will start their celebrations this afternoon.

They will continue tomorrow with a tour of the school, followed by a banquet and dance in each town.
