Sleeping woman rescued from smoke-filled house

An elderly woman was rescued by firefighters after her house was engulfed by smoke on Tuesday night.

Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Fire Officer Terry Michie said emergency services were called to the Clyde St house about 10.30pm after neighbours were alerted by smoke alarms.

Firefighters found a pot of boiling eggs on the stove.

Inspecting the house, they found the occupant asleep in bed.

"The house was smoke-logged. Two firefighters carried her out. We found her within five minutes of our arrival."

The woman was taken for a medical check before being released to her family.
