Skate park option for swimming pool site seems popular

Turning the old Lawrence swimming pool into a skate park is the latest suggestion for what has been called an ''eyesore''.

Lawrence residents Lisa and Darcy Win told the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board about the idea at the board's public forum on Wednesday.

There was a lot of interest and support for the idea from locals, Mrs Win said.

Mr Win said a skate park did not necessarily have to use the old building, and that could be demolished. He was more interested in the site, given it was ideally situated between the school and the town's hub.

Board member Rowena Paterson said the board held a public meeting more than a year ago to discuss the pool's future, but there were few suggestions then.

Plans to convert the pool into a community garden were still in development after resident Marjorie Hay's suggestion last year, but the cost of the removing roofing elements at the pool, which would be necessary for its conversion, had escalated.

The plans had been put on hold since the board had resolved to engage in further discussions with Ms Hay about how to cover the potential $50,000 cost.

Board member Gary McCorkindale said the building was ''deteriorating quickly'' and continued to be an eyesore that needed to be dealt with.

The board suggested Mr and Mrs Win conduct a feasibility study and submit a proper proposal. It would note their idea and contact Ms Hay to determine what stage the plan for the garden had reached.
