Six60 concert preparations have kept staff too busy to celebrate their own birthday at Balclutha’s new community centre.

The Clutha District War Memorial & Community Centre Te Pou Ō Mata-Au (TPŌMA) was officially open one year last Monday, but there has been no time to sit back and reflect on the past 12 months.

"We’ve been switching so quickly from one booked event to another we’re just focusing on going all out for Six60 as our weekend birthday bash," facility director Mary Woodrow said yesterday.

Tomorrow is the long-awaited date for the globally successful New Zealand band to play the encore of their Grassroots Tour.

The venue for this "One More Show" was put to a vote in July when Balclutha’s success over Palmerston North, Raglan, Rotorua and Whangarei paved the way for Six60 to make good on a 10-year-old promise to rock Clutha.

Doors will open at 2.30pm for the matinee and 7pm for the night show.

Most of the 750 tickets for each will be standing, but the last tier of seating will be set up for VIPs and special access.

A live stand-up comedy event features tonight at the centre.

Tomorrow’s tasks will include packing out the auditorium to help the band’s roadies and ticketing crew prepare for the big gigs showcasing acoustic, stripped-back versions of the band’s biggest hits.

"We have a volunteer force of about 30 people to help out on Saturday. Rotary club will be outside managing with parking, food stalls and road crossings, and I understand [the] youth council will be running a charity barbecue," Ms Woodrow said.

"Maybe when it’s all over we’ll find time to cut a cake or something."
