Six60 to perform after vote

South Otago fans have secured Six60 in Balclutha for the final performance of their Grassroots Tour.

The only South Island location in an online vote, Balclutha beat North Island centres Whangarei, Palmerston North, Rotorua and Raglan to clinch two exclusive concerts for the Clutha District War Memorial & Community Centre, Te Pou ō Mata-Au (TPŌMA) on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

The Dunedin rock-pop group Six60 said they enjoyed their recent Grassroots Tour so much they decided to announce a single encore show at a venue to be decided by online vote.

Hearing the news, Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan and the district’s Youth Council quickly mobilised to encourage local voting to help square the circle on a decade-old deal.

"About 10 years ago Six60 was fired up for a Balclutha concert under Telford’s massive indoor equestrian centre," Mr Cadogan said.

"Right at that moment, their success exploded and they were offered opportunities overseas they couldn’t pass up."

"A bit later I bumped into them in the Octagon, and over a beer they promised they would come to Clutha when they had the time.

"[Now] we are absolutely stoked to get our favourite band to Clutha.

"This is such a bonus for our district to celebrate, and we are looking forward to hosting Six60 in true southern style.

"A very special thanks to One NZ for helping make this happen for our district, and a big thanks to Six60. We can’t wait," he said.

Six60 announced the news on TV3 on Tuesday, July 23, and 750 standing-audience tickets will be available from August 1-2 for both the matinee and evening show.

"We are delighted Balclutha won the vote for ‘One More Show’ on Six60’s Grassroots Tour," facility director Mary Woodrow said.

"The week of the concerts is one year since the opening of TPŌMA .. this is an amazing way to celebrate our first anniversary.

"We were up against cities with a larger population than Balclutha, so it just goes to show what our community can achieve when we put our minds to it."

The band’s promoters said the South led early voting but it had become neck-and-neck over the final weekend and Balclutha won by just 2% of the vote.

"We can’t wait to connect with our fans in Balclutha, who voted to bring ‘One More Show’ of the Grassroots Tour NZ to their town," a Six60 release said.

"We’ve got a very special show in store for you."
