The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Milton.

On Saturday, the town's Christmas tree, in the grounds of the Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church, was decorated in about two and a-half hours, according to the Milton Area Promotions spokeswoman Gaynor Finch.

Yesterday, Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan called on main-street businesses, handing out invitations to join him and other Milton retailers for a get-together on Friday.

"I'm getting Milton retailers together to talk about things. I'll put on the drink if someone buys a bag of chips," he said.

Mr Cadogan said he found businesses in Milton to be up-beat and looking forward to Christmas trading.

Mrs Finch said the tree decorating on Saturday had been done by a team of community-minded people.

Milton Rotary Club members helped with placing the lights around the bottom of the tree, while Calder Stewart provided a hydraulic platform for decorating higher up.

"Each year, we are getting more and more decorations. There are things happening in Milton, and it's really good to see," Mrs Finch said.
