A surf carnival and market day at Campbells Bay could become bigger next year, as a major fund-raiser for Kakanui School.

The surf carnival, on Saturday, was the first held at Kakanui bay for more than 10 years and Oamaru retailers Soul Surf and Skate tied it in with a chance to raise money for the local school.

Event co-ordinator Jo Perkins expected the school would get about $1200 - ‘‘a good effort for a first time''.

‘‘I had approaches from people who wanted to set up stalls and be involved next year,'' she said.

About 50 surfers from as far away as Dunedin and Ashburton took part in five events.

The school organised about 20 stalls and family fun competitions on the beach, including sand sculpting, tug of war, Hula-Hoop, relay races and a beach dig for prizes.

The market day ran until about 3.30pm with the surf competition winding up about 4pm.
