When Covid-19 booster shots became available on November 29 last year, the Government said it would prioritise the additional vaccinations for older people who were living in residential care.
That process drew to a close in the South yesterday at Clutha View Lifecare in Balclutha, where a team from Gore administered 60 shots to residents, and a handful of staff.
Facility manager Judith McMillan praised the health board for its efforts in protecting the region’s elderly and vulnerable, saying the session had gone "incredibly smoothly".
"This is a celebration for the DHB to reach this milestone, allowing our residents to know they now have all they need in protection to face Omicron as and when it arrives.
"It’s also a comfort to their loved ones that they’ve done all they can to protect their family members."
The facility is home to 63 residents, cared for by more than 60 staff.
The booster session had taken about two hours, Mrs McMillan said.
Among those receiving their shot was resident since last March Reta Crawford.
Mrs Crawford (88), said she had been unfazed by the injection, and had felt no ill effects from any of her vaccination jabs.
"You don’t want to worry about a little jab," she said.
"I see there’s a few people frightened out there, but it’s just silly if you start making all this fuss. It’s a good thing that we’re all protected now."
