Navigating the increasingly technological world of education requires special skills, and Warepa School, southwest of Balclutha, has just finished a week dedicated to those skills.

Technology week was organised after flooding earlier in the year prevented the school's 54 pupils from attending Kids' Congress 2010 (a technology/learning conference for 9- to 12-year-olds) in Christchurch.

Warepa school teacher Katie White said techno week demonstrated what type of technology was out there and the different ways it could be used.

The pupils received instruction on how to use software programs such as PowerPoint, Photo Booth, iMovie, iWeb, Comic Life, SketchUp, and many others.

Speakers included Parry Jones, from Sticky TV, Andrea Roberston, from the College of Education, garage band guru Russell Flemming, and IApplication expert Peter Coles.

The hands-on experience helped children become experts in a variety of media and enabled them to support others in the classroom, Miss White said.
