Poplars to be axed

Old Lombardy poplars in the Lawrence Picnic Reserve can be felled, the Clutha District Council says.

An arborist raised concerns about the health of the trees, noting decay at the base of trunks, and the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board concurred.

At the council's district assets committee meeting in Balclutha on Thursday, chief executive Charles Hakkaart said Lawrence was once ''famous'' for its poplars but the trees should be removed, as they were infected with two types of fungus and so were ''becoming a danger''.

Once the trees are felled, the area will be replanted with a different species of tree.
