The Clutha District Council is happy with the progress being made on the upgrade of the Balclutha Centennial Pool, despite its reopening date being delayed.

Clutha District Council corporate services manager Alan Dickson said the pool was expected to reopen sometime next month, but delays in removing and replacing the roof and incorrect tiles arriving from Italy meant the pool was not likely to reopen until late April.

Dunedin-based company Lund South Ltd won the $3.5 million upgrade contract.

"Some of the delays are not the contractor's fault. Strong winds and bad weather slowed work on the roof and the wrong colour tiles were sent from Italy."

Mr Dickson said the upgrade seemed to be on budget, and would include a therapeutic pool and bulkhead as community fundraising met the additional costs of those facilities.

Balclutha has been without a therapeutic pool since the late 1990s when the Balclutha Hospital, which housed one, closed.

The bulkhead would allow the 33m pool to be split into a standard competition length 25m lap pool and smaller family or learners' pool, he said, bringing it into line with most other pools around New Zealand.
