Detective Sergeant Kate Bartlett, of Balclutha, said the base would be situated in the Kaitangata and Districts Promotions building, and would be operating before the end of the month.
"It will be manned three mornings or afternoons a week; we are trying to work out the logistics of that now."
Staff would be rostered on, with the appropriate resources allocated to the position to "make it work".
The community constable base was being set up to give assurances to Kaitangata residents that police were working for them, Det Sgt Bartlett said.
Police went door-to-door with their inquiries in Kaitangata last Thursday, asking questions related to arsons on January 2 and 22, two suspicious forestry fires on February 25 and a suspected arson at a Christchurch St property on February 27.
Police were also looking for details about a Molotov cocktail, thrown at a Market St property on the same night as the Christchurch St fire.
The occupants of the Market St property extinguished the fire.
"We are still awaiting confirmation from ESR in relation to items found at the scene of the Christchurch St and Market St fires," Det Sgt Bartlett said.
