Police called to domestic incident

Police were called to a domestic-related assault in Milton on Tuesday night.

Acting Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Balclutha, said two police staff attended the alleged assault at shearing quarters in Milton, shortly before midnight to find a 33-year-old unemployed man, who recently moved to the area from Hastings, had gone to where his former partner lived, and assaulted her with a weapon.

Acting Sgt Dinnissen was unable to state what the weapon was, as police were talking with witnesses in relation to the incident.

The 33-year-old man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court this morning.

• Balclutha police also charged a 42-year-old Christchurch man with drink-driving and careless use of a motor vehicle after he crashed into the Balclutha Bridge on Tuesday night.

The man was alleged to be almost three times over the adult limit, with a breath-alcohol level of 1112mcg, and was stopped by police after he hit the Balclutha Bridge with his utility vehicle three times, about 8pm.

Acting Sgt Dinnissen said the cost the damage to the bridge was unknown. The man is due to appear in the Balclutha District Court, in Gore, on Monday.
