Kaitangata's new community constable had a quiet first day at his post in the township yesterday.

Const Tom Taylor, of Balclutha, spent the morning setting up a police base in the Kaitangata Community Centre, ready to liaise with the locals.

Balclutha police have created the position to help ease fears and to work more closely with the community after a spate of arson attacks in Kaitangata recently.

Const Taylor said he would be available at the centre on Tuesdays between 9am and noon and Thursdays between 12.30pm and 3pm, but would look at adjusting times to suit what the people of Kaitangata needed.

The availability of police in the township would depend on other activities, including leave, training and filling in at the Balclutha station, he said.

Const Taylor said he was available to talk to anyone who wanted to see him - "even if it's just for tea and scones".
