The Clutha District Council recently approved the purchase of a ''roktopus'' combination tower for the playground in Lanark St.
The tower features a climbing wall, slide, and giant mouse wheel, selected by the Clutha District Youth Council.
Youth council chairwoman Kate Morrison said the group wanted to ensure there was something at the playground for older children.
''The mouse wheel will be awesome.''
The youth council also recommended removing the hedge along Clyde St and replacing it with a fence.
''It's one of the first things you see when you drive over the bridge into Balclutha. We want to make it safer and more appealing,'' Miss Morrison said.
The upgrade was budgeted for the 2013-14 financial year.
At the district council's recent meeting, district assets manager Jules Witt said the new addition would cost about $70,000.
When questioned by councillor John Cochrane about the cost, Mr Witt said it was due to the size of the structure.
''Playground equipment isn't cheap ... It's certainly not out of whack with other large playground equipment.''
Most modern playground equipment lasted at least 20 years, he said.
Cr Hamish Anderson said the upgrade was a ''wonderful thing'' which would add to the experience of young people in the district.
Planning and regulatory services manager David Campbell said the Waitaki District Council had recently spent about $500,000 to develop a steampunk-themed playground at the Oamaru Harbour.
The youth council's recommendations were unanimously approved by the district council.
