Museum acting curator Roz McKechnie said she did not know when they had inherited six boxes of photos and negatives from the Buyck Colour Lab Balclutha.
"The photos are all taken of Clutha District family groups and portraits during the 1980s and we would love to reunite them with the families in them.
"We have names on the outside of packets but no addresses, so if you can remember if and when you were shot formally by the Buyck colour lab then come down to the museum and see if your old photos are here,'' she said.
The Buyck Colour Lab closed in the 1990s and, according to relatives contacted here in Balclutha, the owner returned to Holland more than 20 years ago.
Dr McKechnie said it would be nice to return the memories to local families, especially as they were so formally shot.
She said there are even prized pet photos in there.
